Two Things that Every Construction Site Needs this Winter

When winter hits, your construction site needs to be ready. Your crew needs to have the amenities they need to keep warm and safe during the colder months. While much of your site may remain the same, there are some things you need to add during the winter. Doing so will improve your crew's morale and make them feel more valued. Here are a few of these items you'll want on hand during the colder months to ensure your crew is safe and comfortable.

Make Sure to Have Restroom and Hand Wash Facilities Available

Restrooms and Handwashing Stations Make Construction Sites Safer For Workers And Those Visiting The Site | Pacific Sanitation

Most job sites have at least one porta-potty and one hand wash station. You may need to have more than one, especially if your job site is busy. Your crew may be trying to complete projects during the winter before the temperatures drop or a winter storm blows in. Some projects may also need to be completed before the end of the year. To meet these deadlines, you may need to bring in more people to get a job finished before it gets too cold to pour concrete or do other tasks. The more crew you have on-site, the more porta-potties and hand wash stations you’re going to need.

There are a number of different porta potty rental options. You can go with the basic version, but there are also deluxe and large ADA-compliant options. You can rent a porta-potty on a trailer so it can easily be moved or even one that can be raised and lowered for construction sites that have multiple levels. There are also upscale restroom options. Make sure you find the right option for your crew so they can have access to these facilities at any point in the day.

Hand wash stations are just as important, especially during the winter. This is the season when colds and the flu can easily be spread from one worker to another. The continuing COVID-19 pandemic is also a concern. Employees need to be able to wash their hands regularly. You may be tempted to place handwashing stations near the porta-potties because it naturally makes sense, but you may need some elsewhere, too. If you have an area where employees regularly take breaks or eat lunch, be sure to have a station there, too. Any place an employee may eat or interact with others in close quarters should have a station.

Your Construction Site Needs a DumpsterWhen Your Construction Site Needs a Dumpster Call Pacific Sanitation

Another item you’ll need, especially during the winter, is a dumpster. You’re going to generate a good amount of construction debris during a job, and it has to go somewhere. Your crew avoids hauling this debris to the local landfill or other location by having a dumpster on-site. They’re not driving on wet or slippery roads, so they avoid the dangers that come with these winter conditions. By preventing potential accidents, you could save money on potential workers’ compensation costs and vehicle repair.

Most dumpster rental companies include pickup, so you don’t have to worry about dumping the dumpsters once you’re done with them. However, you do need to make certain you can put construction debris into the dumpster you’ve rented. Some dumpsters are designed to hold heavy construction material such as bricks and concrete, while others are not. Make certain you fully understand what you can place in the dumpster to avoid additional fees.

Size also plays a factor. Typically, larger dumpsters rent for more money. If you rent one that’s larger than you need, you may be wasting some of your budget every week. However, if your dumpster is too small, you may fill it up before the scheduled pickup. To find the right size, you may have to go through a small trial-and-error period. If you’re uncertain, rent the larger dumpster first and see how full it is when it’s picked up. If you go with the smaller size, you may run out of space and have to pay for another dumpster to finish the clean-up.
